Stress and Pain

Stress and pain often go together. When we feel under pressure or stress we tend to tighten different parts of our body in a type of stress response, as if we were getting ready for a fight. Quite frequently we will lift our shoulders up to our ears when we are stressed or we may clench our jaw or fists. To make matters worse, when we are under stress our body releases hormones that make us even more tense. Too much of these hormones can negatively impact our body and overall wellbeing.  They are designed for emergency action such as when we are faced with danger. But a continual or regular release of stress hormones will put your body and mind under duress, creating inflammation, fatigue and illness. Our responses to stress are normal, but prolonged stress will often result in fatigued muscles, tight bands and knots in our body and perhaps tension headaches or more chronic muscle and joint pain. Stress has also been linked to anxiety, high blood pressure and heart disease.

If you are experiencing pain in your body, chances are high that you’re suffering from a prolonged stress response. Rather than reaching for the painkillers, comfort food or substances to alleviate the symptoms, lets look at ways in which we can help treat the underlying causes of your stress and pain. There are several effective things you can do including stretching, breathing exercises, meditation, getting more physical exercise, reducing caffeine and getting regular bodywork such as remedial and deep tissue massage.

When it comes to looking after one’s body and wellbeing, many of us would fit into the category of seeking the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff scenario. In other words we often do very little prevention and maintenance work and will only seek help when it it gets too bad.

Massage is one of those amazing centuries old therapies that has the ability to greatly improve the symptoms of those suffering from pain and stress but to also act as a preventative care solution by improving your body’s readiness and responses to stress.

A regular massage will improve circulation, muscle tone, hormone balance, pain symptoms and relaxation.

At Health and Massage Christchurch, we specialise in addressing stress and pain, so why not check out our Introductory Offer? It’s Just $59 for your first health message.
